Bangor Castle — now the town hall — sits in Castle Park just up from the marina, a short drive from our base on the Ards Peninsula. We've photographed weddings all over North Down for years, so we arrive knowing the registry rooms, the staircase and the quiet corners of the grounds that most couples never think to use.

The real draw here is variety in a small footprint: a handsome interior for the ceremony, formal lawns for the family groups, and the restored Walled Garden — all clipped hedges, arches and seasonal colour — for the couple portraits. On a fine evening you can walk down toward the coastal path for a last frame with the Lough behind you. It means a two- or three-hour package goes a very long way at Bangor Castle.
